Introducing Christchurch Massage Therapist, Dawn Burke

Now, having spent two years in the mainland, this Northlander has begun to find a nice little niche at Roughan Chiropractic working alongside the chiropractors in the practice to provide overall rehabilitation and relaxation.

Although trained in Auckland at the NZ College of Massage to achieve my Diploma in Therapeutic and Sports Clinical massage, I am continually attending workshops to up-skill and add new and the latest techniques that will benefit not just the elite athlete but the ordinary 'weekend warrior' and those of you who have begun to break down.

With a background in playing and coaching sports at a representative level and over 20 years of teaching Physical Education, I enjoy utilising these past skills to assist those who want to get back on their feet, even if it's just a stepping stone to your exercise regime.

Being accredited to the New Zealand Academy of Sport as a provider it means I get out and about working with various teams and sports events, such as NZ swim, Paralympians, multi-sports (triathlon, Ironman, Coast to Coast) marathon, cyclists, martial arts, cricket, hockey, netball, and rugby at a representative and international level.

As a soft tissue therapist I offer the following techniques:

  • Swedish
  • Myofascial release
  • Deep Tissue
  • Trigger Point Therapy
  • Stretching and Strengthening exercises - to 'tune-up' the body

Remember: "Pain is in the mind, reminding the body to take notice of what's going on"

Therapeutic benefits:

  • Relaxation/Rehabilitation
  • Stress release at home or work
  • Tension release – headache, clenched jaw, tight shoulders
  • Overuse injuries – R.S.I. or O.S.S., tennis or golfers elbow, tendonitis
  • Poor posture – faulty biomechanics
  • Trauma – muscle strains, joint sprains, injuries

Sport Specific benefits:

  • Get that competitive edge
  • Increase your range of movement
  • Decrease your injury risk
  • Increase your recovery rate

Getting to middle-age we find we can regain our

  • strength
  • stamina
  • speed

But the stretch in the ligament/tendon needs the special technique of A.I.S. (Active Isolated Stretching) to put that 'spring back into your step and swing back into that trunk'.

Give it a go!
Dawn is available in clinic Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am – 6pm, plus every alternate Saturday.

Introducing Christchurch Massage Therapist, Liz Ryan

I have been practising massage as a solo practitioner for six years.  This new opportunity to belong to a team approach of wellness care here at Roughan Chiropractic is very exciting for me. Before joining the Roughan Chiropractic Health team I operated my therapeutic massage business in Hanmer Springs.  It is fun to now be part of the team here in Christchurch who are passionate about wellness.  I have a Diploma of Massage Therapy together with a Certificate of Reflexology.

With my varied post-graduate skills I can tailor the type of care specific to the needs of the individual, whether they arrive of their own initiative or come on referral from one of the practitioners within the practice. I specialise in Therapeutic, Sports, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point, Lymphatic Drainage and Reflexology.

I am passionate about massage and specialise in tailoring each treatment to suit the individual’s needs, either to regain health following an injury, or in assisting a wellness care approach.

Reflexology uses pressure on specific points on the feet.  This ancient treatment aims to balance the body’s systems through a series of zones which link particular reflex points on the feet with specific organs in the body.

Lymphatic Drainage is an advanced therapy in which the therapist uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move skin in the direction of lymph flow.  This technique is used successfully in detox approaches, including sinusitis, oedema and sprains.

Liz is available in clinic on Thursday 9am – 6pm, Friday 9am – 5pm and every alternate Saturday.
