Meet the Roughan Chiropractic Team

Meet Karyn Gilmore, Practice Manager

My challenging role as Practice Manager here at Roughan Chiropractic has many highlights and special moments.  I feel privileged to be part of this amazing practice and to keep things running smoothly.

I genuinely love being involved helping patients get well.  We receive people at reception who often have acute symptoms and just to watch them get well is a pleasure to behold.  Health is everything!  I have worked in the health industry for years now, but I have never experienced this kind of health and delivery of it.

I'm known as the part time nanny, for looking after patient's wee ones - a job that I love, which lets Mum and Dad have their much deserved treatment.  We are growing and as an awesome team we have so much to offer.  Check us out; we look forward to helping you on your health journey.

Meet Olivia, Natural Med Dispensary Manager
Olivia

People are often shocked that I have never had antibiotics, painkillers or vaccinations and yet I have never been to a medical doctor or been under hospital care.  I am extremely grateful for my natural health upbringing and would love to see the sickness paradigm that most people are accustomed to some day change to a wellness system.  We all deserve to maintain optimal health and shouldn’t wait for symptoms on feeling sick as a reason to take painkillers and “hope it maybe goes away” – there’s such a better way to live!  With medicine these days we are living longer than our ancestors but we are definitely not living healthier.

“If I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself” – Eubie Blake on his 100th birthday.

I love managing our large NaturalMed Dispensary and hearing the most incredible stories from our patients and practice members about how chiropractic and applied kinesiology has changed their lifes for the better.  Often we see people who have been struggling with their health for years and come to us after hearing from a friend or a work colleague the benefits they have achieved since coming to Roughan Chiropractic.  Our most common feedback is "I wish I had known about this place sooner!"

Being a Blood Type A I am more than happy to help those who need support in 'Eating Right For Your Type' or basic nutrition recommendations.  Being one of the VLA technicians at our practice allows me to spend time with our patients who like to monitor their health, whether they are looking to lose weight, training for a sport event, or would just like to know how their body is coping with their current lifestyle.  I am very passionate about 'Eating Right For Your Type' and have performed the simple blood type test on patients from 8 days old to 88 years old.  No matter where we are in our lives, living to the best of our ability is so important.

You'll normally spot me in the practice running around doing a hundred things at once but I am always happy to talk with our patients and practice members and hear everybody's individual stories.  I can always be found at our monthly Health Care Classes which are held on the first Thursday of every month taking notes and assisting our chiropractors.  Although I have had the privilege of chiropractic care and applied kinesiology my entire life, every single day I learn something new, and it is always exciting.

Meet Katie, Chiropractic Assistant

My first contact at Roughan Chiropractic was as a patient.  I was referred here after having an ongoing sports injury which was not improving after six months of frustrating treatment.  I noticed a significant difference after my first adjustment.  I was elated with the continuous progress I made while seeing one of the skilled practitioners here.

Seeing firsthand the wonderful work the Applied Kinesiologists and Doctors of Chiropractic do here I jumped at the chance to become part of the team here at Roughan Chiropractic.

I am currently studying psychology at the University of Canterbury.  I love seeing our patients get the same successful results I did.  The opportunity to work here was significant for me as I hope to integrate natural medicine later on in my studies.

Meet James, Chiropractic Assistant
James

Chiropractic is a major part of my life.  Growing up I always thought I had an advantage knowing chiropractic, the fact it gives me perfect health and well-being was a great privilege.  Chiropractic advanced me physically in my sport and general fitness activities, and also helped my mental state.  Knowing about chiropractic and how everyone sees it as an alternative medicine has broadened my thinking in keeping an open mind about everything.

While here at Roughan Chiropractic I am looking into following my own career toward one day becoming a chiropractor.  Having the privilege of being brought up with chiropractic, it is important for me to know that my own children will have the same benefits.  I am currently in my first year of University studying Health Sciences.  Next year I will start my Chiropractic study at the NZ College of Chiropractic in Auckland.  I plan to use my current opportunity as a chiropractic assistant to learn more about chiropractic, and to fully understand how our practice can best serve those who come to us.

In my spare time I love to play sport, particularly rugby, playing for Marist Club here in Christchurch this season.  I also like to spend time with mates, going down to the park, travelling or just having fun.  I am always keen in getting outdoors, getting heaps of exercise and enjoying it all at the same time!

I look forward to meeting you.

Meet Nadia, Chiropractic Assistant

After studying at the University of Canterbury towards my BA in Gender studies and working part time in retail, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to join the team at Roughan Chiropractic.

When I started I knew very little about chiropractic, and was amazed to learn the multitude of benefits of chiropractic treatment beyond back pain, I never realised chiropractic was about more than just the spine, but about the whole nervous system and general wellness.

As a child I was introduced to natural health care when undiagnosed multiple food allergies caused health issues, and antibiotics prescribed by a GP simply exacerbated my problems.  When I was diagnosed with multiple food allergies my mother decided to take the natural health route and there was a dramatic improvement!  Ever since I have been a big supporter of natural medicine and holistic health care, and as I plan to study psychotherapy in the future I especially appreciate how the holisitic approach of Applied Kinesiology addresses all sides of health - including emotional and spiritual as well as the chemical and structural.

Every day is a new learning experience as I begin to appreciate the benefits of natural health care including chiropractic treatment.  Eating right for your type can be challenging - especially as an AB - but even small changes can make a huge difference.

I love meeting and greeting all our patients and new practice members who come through our doors and helping you to receive the best level of care from our dedicated team.

Meet Cherita, Chiropractic Assistant

I have only been at Roughan Chiropractic for a very short time so I will be a new face to many patients and practice members.  I am the front desk Chiropractic Assistant on Saturdays, though I can be found around the practice during the weekdays sometimes too, when I'm not at the University of Canterbury studying towards my Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science.

Although I am still learning the chiropractic way of total health and wellbeing, I love what I know so far!  The dedicated team here is so enthusiastic about health, it is simply contagious!  Hope to see you all here on your own path to well being and health.

Meet Ailish, Chiropractic Assistant - Colour Kinesiologist
Ailish

I have worked part time as a Chiropractic Assistant and Colour Kinesiologist at Roughan Chiropractic for some years.  The natural health paradigm is basic to my way of life and I continue to be enthused by the work achieved by the team in this practice. My team role as an Instructor in Touch for Health assists much of the work of Applied Kinesiology for those of you who want to learn skills you can use at home.

The rest of the week you can find me in my jewellery studio, or Connexions Gallery at the Arts Centre, creating magical creatures out of sterling silver and gemstones.  Dragons are my favourite! www.ailishjewellery.co.nz

I have travelled a lot, especially through Europe but I love the freedom of New Zealand outdoors, especially the tranquility of being surrounded by nature and forest.  I enjoy tramping, rock climbing, kayaking, dancing and a fast game of squash!

Touch for Health - Health care method for non-professionals

Touch for Health originated in 1970 when Dr John Thie decided to make practical and effective methods of balancing the body’s energy available to the non-professional public.

Dr George Goodheart DC had already developed a system of healing called Applied Kinesiology (AK), specifically for professional health care practitioners. Dr Thie took some of the more basic techniques of AK, with the aim of empowering people to promote and maintain health in themselves and their families. He named this simple yet powerful preventative system of health care Touch for Health (TFH).

Most people are aware that the body exists as both a physical and non-physical entity; we have an energic “blue print” that directs the workings of the body. Touch for Health perceives the body as wholistic and multidimensional, and allows people to harmonise these dimensions.

The concept of the “Triangle of Health” sums up this philosophy. This paradigm presents humans as existing, in addition to Spirit, in structural, chemical and mental/emotional dimensions. A person exists in a state of optimal life-force and health when the triangle is equilateral and the sides are in balance.

This perfect balance, however, is never quite achieved, as the wonderfully adaptive body compensates and compromises in order to survive daily challenges. When one side is unbalanced, the other two sides are influenced pathologically. This causes a distorted triangle, giving rise to various signs and symptoms of dis-ease.

Often these people have no medically diagnosed disease, yet they suffer at the “subclinical” level. Whether or not a person has a medically diagnosed condition is irrelevant, as kinesiology works toward balancing the non-physical energy – the blueprint – and not in treating the categorized symptoms of medically diagnosed disease.
